Education in Crisis: How R.O.S.A Bridges the Gap Between Learning and the Future of Work

At R.O.S.A., we believe that education is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of sustainable change. But right now, the system meant to prepare young people for the future is struggling to keep up, and the gap between what education delivers and what the world demands has never been wider.

The numbers tell a sobering story. 273 million children and youth are currently out of school, roughly 1 in 6 school-age children worldwide. The world needs 44 million additional teachers by 2030 just to meet universal education goals. Climate events have disrupted learning for 242 million children across 85 countries. Attacks on schools, students, and education staff have increased by 40%. And even for those who do make it to the classroom, many still leave without the foundational learning and practical skills needed to thrive in adult life.

But the crisis doesn’t end at access. Even when young people are in school, the question remains: are they being prepared for the world they are actually entering?

The world of work is changing faster than any curriculum can keep up with. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, many of today’s students will eventually work in roles that don’t yet exist. The industries growing fastest in the 21st century, from green technology to AI-driven services, are not just looking for academic credentials. They are looking for people who can think critically, solve complex problems, adapt to uncertainty, collaborate across cultures, and lead with empathy.

This is the gap R.O.S.A. was founded to bridge. What the World Economic Forum and Davos leaders now call “power skills,” analytical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, communication, leadership, and resilience, are no longer optional. They are the core currency of the modern job market. Yet for millions of young people in underserved communities around the world, these skills are rarely taught, rarely modeled, and rarely within reach.

Founded in Rome, Italy in 2014, R.O.S.A. works to change that. Through immersive volunteer programs and international internships, we equip learners of all ages with the tools they need to navigate a future we can’t fully predict, from Africa to Southeast Asia and beyond. Whether it’s building digital literacy, developing social and emotional learning, or mentoring the next generation of leaders, our work is rooted in one belief: education must prepare young people not just for school, but for life.

The challenges are significant. But so is the opportunity. When we invest in the right kind of education, inclusive, skills-based, and globally minded, we don’t just change individual lives. We change the future.

Education shapes the future and the destiny of millions of youth. How do you think we can make education more accessible and inclusive in disadvantaged areas of the world? Please share your ideas in the comments below!
