Week 1 of the ReCoding Africa TTT Program – Training Teachers for Tomorrow: A Transformative Start in Zanzibar
The first week of the ReCoding Africa TTT (Training Teachers for Tomorrow) program has just come to an end — and what an incredible beginning it has been!
Participants described the experience as upskilling, inspiring, and well organized, a clear reflection of the enthusiasm and commitment that have defined this important initiative from the very start.
Hosted at the Nkrumah Teacher Training College in Zanzibar, trainees have spent the first week learning, sharing, and growing together through digital literacy sessions, teamwork, and interactive classroom discussions.
On Friday, November 14th,2025, Mr. Khalid M. Wazir, Deputy Principal Secretary for Administration at the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar, officially opened the TTT Program on behalf of the newly reconfirmed Minister of Education, Lela Muhamed Mussa, marking the formal launch of this meaningful journey for the professional development of local educators and leaders. 🌍
This experience is made of hard work, sincere dedication, and a shared commitment to contributing to social change and local development — one teacher, one classroom, and one student at a time.
Building Digital Capacity with IBM SkillsBuild
During Week 1, participants took part in the Digital Literacy course on the IBM SkillsBuild platform, strengthening their understanding of how digital tools can enhance teaching and learning.
They explored Google Classroom and its apps as effective tools for designing online, hybrid, and blended courses, allowing them to create more flexible and inclusive learning environments.
The instructors also introduced Kahoot!, which quickly captured everyone’s interest. Teachers experimented with its features for creating interactive quizzes, formative assessments, and engaging lesson plans — tools that make learning fun while fostering creativity and participation.
By combining these platforms, trainees are building a toolkit that will allow them to integrate technology into their curriculum development and teaching practices, encouraging curiosity, collaboration, active learning and confidence among their students.
What Is ReCoding Africa?
ReCoding Africa is an in-depth, service-learning initiative developed by R.O.S.A. (Remove Obstacles to Social Awareness) to bridge the digital divide across Africa.
The program provides free training in coding, digital literacy, and soft skills to young people and educators, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing digital world.
Using a “train-the-trainer” model, the program is currently empowering and training 40 high school teachers in Zanzibar, equipping them with ICT skills, modern teaching methods, student-centered strategies, and a mindset that embraces continuous innovation and life long learning
This work, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar and supported by the Cisco Foundation, ensures that the program represents not just a training course — but a lasting investment in education and digital transformation.
Learning Through Collaboration
At its core, ReCoding Africa is about service, teamwork, and shared learning.
Volunteers, interns, and teachers learn from one another, exchange knowledge, and build human connections that extend far beyond the classroom.
The program demonstrates how one well-prepared teacher can impact hundreds of students throughout their career, multiplying opportunities for generations to come.
It also reflects the power of partnership — local institutions, international volunteers, and global supporters working together toward one common goal: quality education for all.
Beyond the Classroom
The TTT team also took time to immerse themselves in Zanzibar’s vibrant culture, discovering the island’s beauty, traditions, and hospitality. Between training sessions and sunsets by the Indian ocean, they connected with local people, exchanged stories, and found inspiration in every encounter.
Because, as we believe at R.O.S.A., every encounter teaches us something new and expands our horizons. 💙🧡
Looking Ahead
As we move into Week 2, the energy is high and the purpose is clear.
The professionalism, curiosity, and dedication of the teachers and facilitators continue to make this journey both essential and deeply meaningful.
Each participant brings enthusiasm, humility, and a genuine desire to learn — the very qualities that make ReCoding Africa a model of how education can empower, unite, and transform.
If you believe in a future driven by knowledge, integrity, and community, we invite you to connect, collaborate, and join us.
