Bridging Generations: A Social Experiment That Became Family

Imagine a group of 16 people, aged 18 to 79, coming from different Italian cities—Milan, Bologna, Rome, and Naples—gathering in Barcelona for an extraordinary social experiment. Led by Mariarosy Calleri and her organization R.O.S.A. (Remove Obstacle to Social Awareness), this Erasmus Mobility Program was a transformative experience in community building, intergenerational connection, and human understanding.

Over six days, from May 8th to May 13th 2025, 16 strangers became family. Young and old shared stories, laughter, dreams, and wisdom. The energy was contagious—youthful enthusiasm blended with the depth of life experience, creating a unique harmony that left everyone feeling uplifted and inspired.

This intergenerational community project, implemented by R.O.S.A. and funded by the Erasmus + Programme, was made possible thanks to TUCEP – Tiber Umbria Comett Education Programme in Perugia and their Spanish partner, Sagitter Training. The group was hosted at the Residencia SIL, whose excellent facilities played a key role in the project's success.

The Power of Shared Experiences: Theater, Meditation, and the Healing Art of Bread-Making

The program was carefully designed to foster connection through interactive, meaningful activities that engaged both body and mind:

  • The theater labs organized by Sagitter Training fostered artistic exploration and broke down barriers, allowing participants to express themselves freely, regardless of age. Improvisation and storytelling became tools for empathy and mutual understanding.

  • The group meditation on the beach guided by Michele Usher created a space of collective calm, helping the group reflect and connect on a deeper spiritual level.

  • The Pane Panacea Workshop led by Luigi D’Alessio, offered a unique opportunity to experience how bread-making can become a therapeutic daily practice and a tool for community building and social change. Kneading dough side by side, participants discovered how this simple act could combat depression and foster mindfulness—for both young and old. The workshop became a powerful metaphor for life: patience, transformation, and the beauty of creating something together.

The Magic of Intergenerational Exchange

One of the most beautiful outcomes of this project was seeing how generational barriers dissolved naturally.

  • Young participants found themselves deeply engaged in conversations with their older counterparts, listening to their life stories, challenges, and triumphs.

  • Older participants felt rejuvenated by the energy, creativity, and fresh perspectives of the younger generation.

What started as a structured program soon turned into a spontaneous, heartwarming exchange—proof that when different generations come together with openness and respect, something extraordinary happens.

A Success Beyond Expectations

By the end of the six days, no one wanted to leave. The bonds formed were so strong that the idea of separating felt almost painful. This was more than just a successful project—it was proof that intergenerational connection is not only possible but deeply enriching for society.

Inspired by the success of the Erasmus Mobility Program, R.O.S.A. OdV is now embarking on a transformative new chapter: creating a dedicated space for intergenerational exchange along the Roman coastline, where we can find a municipality willing and eager to host our project. Here, the rhythm of the waves becomes a catalyst—a natural force that dissolves barriers, nurtures mindfulness, and draws people together. In this new community space, generations will connect deeply, learning from one another while immersed in the sea’s restorative embrace.

This is more than a project; it’s a vision of unity. By harnessing the sea’s timeless power to heal, inspire, and unite, we aim to cultivate happy, engaged, and socially conscious citizens committed to building a more peaceful world.

The Future of R.O.S.A.: Building Bridges Across Ages

Mariarosy Calleri and her team are now working to expand this mission, designing new programs, workshops, and community initiatives that bring generations together. The goal? To prove that age is just a number and that unity is built through shared experiences, empathy, and mutual respect.

This project in Barcelona was just the beginning. The world needs more spaces where young and old can learn from each other, grow together, and create a future where no generation is left behind.

Final Thoughts

If there’s one lesson to take from this experience, it’s this: Human connection knows no age. When we embrace our differences and celebrate our shared humanity, we don’t just build communities—we build families.
